Hurricane Season and Flooring: What South Florida Homeowners Should Know

Living in Coral Springs and greater Broward County means hurricane season - June through November - is simply part of the calendar every year. It's also a real factor worth thinking about when you're choosing new flooring, so we put together what we tell our own customers.

Why Flooring Choice Matters During Storm Season

Even homes that come through a storm without major damage can deal with power outages lasting days, humidity spiking indoors without AC running, wind-driven rain finding its way past a window or door seal, or - in a worse scenario - actual flooding. Floors that can't handle moisture are the first thing to suffer in any of those situations.

The Most Storm-Resilient Choice: Luxury Vinyl Plank

If storm resilience is a top priority for your household, luxury vinyl plank is the floor we'd point you toward first. Its fully waterproof core means it can handle days of high indoor humidity during a power outage, or even brief water exposure from a leak or minor intrusion, far better than a wood-based product. For rooms especially exposed to wind-driven rain - like a Florida room with sliding doors - sheet vinyl or vinyl flooring offers that same peace of mind with a more seamless surface.

What About Hardwood and Laminate?

Neither hardwood nor laminate flooring is designed to handle standing water or extended high humidity without AC. That doesn't mean you can't have them in your home - most storms don't cause flooding - but if a room is especially exposed (near sliding glass doors, a lanai, or ground-level windows facing prevailing wind), it's worth weighing that risk against the wood look you love.

Simple Storm Prep for Your Floors

  • Check window and door seals each spring, before hurricane season starts, and reseal if needed.
  • Keep towels or moisture barriers on hand for doors and windows most exposed to wind-driven rain.
  • If you'll be away during a storm, ask a neighbor to check for leaks or run a dehumidifier if power is out.
  • After any storm, check floors near exterior doors and windows for moisture as soon as it's safe to do so.

If Your Floors Do Take on Water

Wood-based floors - hardwood or laminate - that get wet need to dry out quickly to avoid warping or moisture underneath. If you ever have water intrusion after a storm, don't wait: get airflow and dehumidification going right away, and reach out to us to assess whether any flooring needs to be replaced. Luxury vinyl plank, by contrast, can typically be cleaned and dried without structural damage to the flooring itself.
