What luxury vinyl tile is

Luxury vinyl tile, usually shortened to LVT, is vinyl flooring made in square or rectangular tile shapes rather than long planks. The tiles are printed to resemble stone, marble, concrete, or ceramic, with a clear wear layer over the design that handles day-to-day scuffing.

It belongs to the same vinyl flooring family as luxury vinyl plank and sheet vinyl. The material is broadly similar across the three - what changes is the format, the installation method, and the look each one is trying to achieve.

The different types you'll come across

LVT is sold in a few different constructions, and they behave differently once installed.

  • Grouted LVT - laid with spacing and real grout lines, so it reads closest to ceramic tile
  • Ungrouted LVT - tight seams, no grout to maintain, a slightly more uniform look
  • Click LVT - rigid tiles that lock together and float over the subfloor
  • Glue-down LVT - bonded directly to the subfloor, which feels more solid and quieter underfoot

How it compares to other floors

Like any format, LVT has trade-offs worth knowing before you decide.

  • Water: waterproof material that is stable directly over a concrete slab
  • Feel: softer and warmer underfoot than ceramic or natural stone, and thinner than real tile
  • Appearance: printed stone and ceramic looks; up close it is less varied than natural stone
  • Subfloor: thin enough that dips and bumps underneath can telegraph through if not leveled first
  • Repairs: individual tiles can often be replaced, though exact matching depends on the product still being available

How it gets installed

The subfloor is cleaned and leveled first, since flatness affects both how the finished floor looks and how long it lasts. The layout is dry-laid to check tile placement and cuts at the edges of the room, then the tiles go down with the correct adhesive or click system for that product.

Grouted installs get grout applied and sealed after the tiles are set, and every install finishes with transitions to adjoining rooms. Timelines depend on square footage, layout, and whether existing flooring is being removed.

Not sure if LVT is right for your home?

There is no single best floor - the right choice depends on the room, how it gets used, and the look you're after. If you're curious whether LVT fits your home, reach out and chat with our team. We're glad to talk it through honestly, including the options that aren't LVT. Contact us or book a free in-home estimate and we'll take a look together.

Vinyl Floor Tiles - frequently asked questions

The material is essentially the same - the difference is format and design. LVT comes in tiles printed to look like stone or ceramic, while LVP comes in planks printed to look like wood. Which one suits a room usually comes down to the look you want.

LVT is thinner, warmer underfoot, and generally quicker to install than tile. Real tile is harder, more scratch-resistant over the long run, and has natural variation that printed designs approximate rather than match.

Grouted installs use a flexible grout that holds up to normal floor movement, but grout lines still collect dirt and need cleaning like any grout. Ungrouted LVT avoids that entirely, at the cost of looking slightly less like real tile.

Typical residential LVT lasts roughly 15-25 years, depending on the wear layer thickness, traffic, and maintenance. Thicker wear layers hold up longer in busy rooms.

Often yes, particularly with glue-down installs, as long as a matching tile is still available. Keeping a few spare tiles from the original order makes this much easier. If you'd like to talk specifics, get in touch.
